“As a mother of a young child, you’re in survival mode.”
These are the words of Brooke, a client who has been doing Pilates with us starting this summer. As the inevitable march of the calendar rolls us onward into November, Brooke has been able to reflect on the role Pilates has played in helping her experience the challenges and joys of motherhood in a new light.
“I just feel a lot stronger,” she told me, emphasizing how much more she can enjoy being a mom when she isn’t in constant pain. When her 7 year old son recently asked if Brooke could lift him up so he could get a better look at a neighbor’s impressive Halloween decorations, she said:
“It was great to not have to say, sorry, mommy’s back hurts.”
A ballet dancer in high school in the 90’s, Brooke utilized Pilates as a young woman with great results. As life went on and priorities changed, Pilates drifted out of Brooke’s life in her 20’s and 30’s. She recognized the difference of not having Pilates in her routine. Being an active mom and sitting in front of a computer for long hours as a freelance book editor with Word Hawk Editing was taking its toll. Chronic neck pain, a sore back, and pelvic instability started to really slow her down. It was then, at the age of 40 and raising a young child, that the memory of Pilates surfaced.
“I remembered how strong I felt doing Pilates, and I wanted that back in my life at 40... for myself, and for my young son.”
Now, after making Pilates a regular part of her life’s routine once again, Brooke happily declares, “I just feel a lot stronger again!” She recognizes the importance of not skipping her sessions, stating, “when I missed a few weeks, my neck started hurting again!”
It isn’t just the physical component of Pilates that brings joy and relief to Brooke’s life -- the mental health benefits are also easy for her to recognize. “Pilates can be very meditative, so I also get that mental health wellness as well.”
